Rate of Ad Revenue Decline at Community Newspapers Slows

By: Jennifer Saba Newspaper advertising revenue at community newspapers declined half the rate of the national industry average, new figures from Suburban Newspapers of America reveal.

Community newspaper ad revenue dropped 12.4% in Q2 year-over-year. The Newspaper Association of America said newspaper ad revenue for the same quarter fell 29%.

The revenue survey included 32 community newspaper organizations totaling 12.5 million in circulation.

SNA measures only total ad revenue though the association noted that survey participants cited softness in the automotive and real estate categories.

The quarterly pace of ad revenue decline is starting to slow as well. In Q1 2009, SNA reported that ad revenue was down 18.7%. The NAA reported it fell 28.2% for the industry.

"Once again, I think the figures make it apparent that the newspaper industry in general is taking a harder economic hit than the community newspapers," Nancy Lane, president of SNA, said in a statement.
