Ray Billingsley's 'Curtis' Comic Strip Turns 20

Posted
By: Dave Astor "Curtis" has reached its 20th anniversary.

When Ray Billingsley's strip was launched by King Features in the fall of 1988, there were only three or four comics by cartoonists of color distributed by major syndicates. Now there are about 15 such comics.

"Curtis" -- which runs in more than 250 newspapers -- stars an 11-year-old urban kid as well as his family, friends, and others.

The award-winning Billingsley was born in North Carolina and grew up there and in New York City. Prior to creating "Curtis," he did the "Lookin' Fine" comic in the early 1980s.
