Readers Hardly Cynical About Christmas Story (and Stories)

Posted
By: E&P Staff Anyone who thinks Americans are growing more apathetic or cynical about the Christmas story, amid all that commercialism, should consider the results of a new Newsweek poll just released.

It shows that:

? 79% believe in the virgin birth and that Jesus lacked a human father.

? Only slightly fewer, 67%, say they believe the entire story of Christmas -- the Star of Bethlehem, the three wise men, and all the rest.

? Extending outward, 55% of those polled say they believe that "every word of the Bible is literally accurate."

? 52% believe that Jesus will return to earth some day ... and 15% think this will happen in their lifetime.

? 62% say they favor teaching "creation science" as well as evolution in the public schools. And 43% favor teaching creationism instead of evolution, with 40% opposing that idea.
