By: E&P Staff The newspaper comic "Reality Check," done by cartoonist Dave Whamond and distributed by United Feature Syndicate, will celebrate its 15th anniversary Saturday.
?Wow! Fifteen years already. It definitely goes by fast ... I?m still having a blast doing it,? Whamond said in a statement. "'Reality Check' has changed over the years but I still get a kick out of drawing the panel and seeing people?s reactions to my work, both good and bad.?
The comic, which runs daily and Sunday, was nominated for this year?s National Cartoonists Society Award for Best Gag Cartoon. Whamond was also nominated for Best Book Illustration (for ?My Think-a-Ma-Jink?). The winners will be announced in May.
An Edmonton, Alberta, native, Whamond grew up in the small northern Canadian town of Whitecourt where, he says, ?there was nothing to do but draw cartoons.? He attended the Alberta College of Art, where he studied visual communications and discovered cartooning and illustration before joining the Calgary Herald. Whamond spent five years at that newspaper, and has since devoted himself full-time to the ?Reality Check?
comic and freelance illustration.
