Recently Hired 'Village Voice' Editor Quits Before He Even Begins

By: E&P Staff Newly-hired Village Voice editor Erik Wemple is not going to take the alternative weekly paper's helm after all.

According to an online article in the Voice, management sent a memo to staff Thursday announcing that Wemple had decided to un-hire himself and remain in his former position as editor at City Paper in Washington D.C.

"Although Wemple accepted the job of editor-in-chief of the historic Voice -- even introducing himself to the staff -- subsequent discussions revealed disagreements over newsroom management," said the memo.

Michael Lacey, the paper's publisher, went on to make a puzzling analogy, saying "The Voice is an enormous and complex horse race. We asked Erik to mount several ponies mid-stride, and he was alarmed to find us still in several of those saddles."

Wemple released a statement that gave a similar picture of the move, and wishing the paper and its staff well.
