By: Bill Goodyear, editor of the Red Bluff Daily News for 25 years and a well-known community personality, has died. He was 57.
Goodyear joined the newspaper in 1972 as a reporter covering crime, courts and government after a stint with the Willows Daily Journal. He became editor in 1977 at age 26.
"He was a first-rate newsman who could handle the hard stories with an exceptional degree of fairness and integrity," said John Fenrich, who worked with
Goodyear first as his editor and later as publisher of the newspaper. "Bill had a way of seeing the human side of complex situations. He made people care about what was going on in their community."
Goodyear led the newspaper to a first-place award for investigative reporting from the California Newspaper Publishers Association for its examination of city hall finances.
He was editor of the Daily News until 2002, when he left to work for Trinity County. Goodyear also served on numerous local boards and clubs.
He died Friday of natural causes following a long illness, according to the county coroner's office.
Goodyear is survived by two daughters, his parents and several siblings. A mass was planned Saturday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Weaverville.
