By: Joe Strupp The Boston Red Sox aren't the only winners after their come-from-behind American League pennant victory over the New York Yankees last night. Boston's newspapers also are seeing success, with both Beantown dailies boosting press runs Thursday morning and reporting unprecedented demands for copies of the victory report.
"They are flying off the shelves; people are walking in and buying 10 and 20 copies," said John Hoarty, vice president/circulation for the Boston Herald. "We had a guy in Florida who bought 4,000 papers. We are shipping them down."
Hoardy said the Herald, which normally prints 300,000 copies of the tabloid, bumped up the press run to 380,000 Thursday, and plans to increase the daily run by 50,000 to 100,000 during the upcoming World Series. The third and final edition of Thursday's Herald included a four-page wrap.
Herald executive are already meeting about the potential sales if the Red Sox -- who have not won a championship since 1918 -- pull off a World Series victory. "We could see a press run of 600,000 or 900,000 if they win," Hoardy predicts. "It would be the biggest collector's item the city of Boston has ever seen."
Some think Thursday's copies of the Herald and The Boston Globe are already collector's items. Dozens of ads on eBay went up just hours after the victory, with some seeking up to $20 a piece for the 50-cent daily papers.
"It's a huge deal here," said Martin Baron, editor of the Globe, which has run a special section daily during the Yankees-Red Sox series and also bumped up its press run Thursday. "We are overprinting by a lot of papers," said Baron.
The Globe boosted its press run for Thursday's paper by 100,000 copies, according to Globe spokesman Maynard Scarborough. The paper is also planning a 16-page special section for Friday on Red Sox World Series history, he said. And a Globe receptionist added that the paper also is receiving numerous out-of-town orders for copies.
"I can't overstate how big a deal it is," Baron said.
