By: E&P Staff Jane Hirt, the founding co-editor and later sole editor of Tribune Co.'s youth-oriented free tabloid RedEye in Chicago, will be the new managing editor of the flagship Chicago Tribune, Editor Gerould W. Kern announced Thursday.
"Jane has the experience and credentials to move our newsroom toward the future," Kern said in a statement. "At RedEye, she has demonstrated a true understanding of the newspaper's audience, and I'm happy that she will bring that expertise to the Chicago Tribune and its readers."
She replaces Hanke Gratteau, a longtime Tribune veteran who took a buyout earlier this month along with about 30 other journalists. Last week, the paper laid off another 40 employees.
RedEye is regarded inside Tribune Tower as one of the recent success stories for the Chicago media giant. The paper's mixture of entertainment news, hard news briefs, and assiduous attention to Chicago's mass transit has grown to a distribution of 200,000 since its launch in October 2002. It began an free but opt-in home-delivered Saturday edition that has more than 100,000 subscribers.
Before joining the RedEye start-up, Hirt was the Tribune's foreign/national news editor. She has been at the Tribune or RedEye for 15 years.
Kern also announced that Bill Adee, associate managing editor/innovation, will become editor/digital media, and Joycelyn Winnecke, associate managing editor/national news, will be associate editor.
Adee and Winnecke together joined the Tribune in 2000 from the Chicago Sun-Times, where he was sports editor and she managing editor.
