By: Jim Rosenberg A new press at the Register-Pajaronian in Watsonville, Calif., is expected to improve color reproduction and efficiency and boost the number of commercial printing customers, which now include the Paso Robles Press, Atascadero News, Cabrillo College Voice, Watsonville High School Wildcat Gazette and Realty Connection.
Dating form the 1980s, the R-P's old Goss Urbanite will be replaced by a 7-year-old Goss Community with more capacity, allowing color on inside pages. The extra work will call for a larger pressroom staff in two shifts, according to Publisher Tom Cross.
Cross told E&P that the Community press (one four-high color tower, four floor units and a folder) came from parent News Media Corp.'s Atascadero pressroom. Manugraph DGM, Elizabethville, Pa., dismantled and re-installed the press; PB Electric, Rancho Cordova, is responsible for handling power and press controls.
The new press is expected to be in operation this month. Until it is, the R-P will be printed by the Monterey County Herald, about 30 miles away. Press scheduling there may require earlier newsroom deadlines and the possibility that some late sports scores and breaking news may appear a day late, Todd Guild reported in Saturday's R-P.
