By: E&P Staff "Saints and Sinners" religion columnist George R. Plagenz died Sunday in Columbus, Ohio, after a brief illness. He was 82.
Plagenz, an ordained minister, was a syndicated columnist for Scripps Howard and United Media's Newspaper Enterprise Association for 32 years.
He began his journalism career as a copyboy and sportswriter for The Cleveland Press from 1943 to 1946 before attending Harvard Divinity School. After graduating in 1949, Plagenz worked as an assistant pastor, a radio broadcaster, and Boston Sunday Advertiser feature writer.
In 1970, he returned to The Cleveland Press as religion editor and then took the same job at The Columbus (Ohio) Citizen Journal.
