'Reno Gazette-Journal' Lets Librarian Go

Posted
By: E&P Staff The Reno Gazette-Journal has laid off its longtime librarian. Jeanne Rasmussen was informed by the Gannett-owned paper that her position would be terminated July 9, according to the Reno News & Review. She had been the librarian at the Gazette-Journal for more than 40 years.

The 60-year-old Rasmussen told the News & Review she planned to return to school to learn more about Web-based archiving. Meanwhile, her position has been taken by a part-time employee, and much of the morgue has been donated to the Nevada Historical Society, though part of it has been saved for continued use by journalists, according to the News & Review.

Meanwhile, media watchers in Reno mourned the loss of a crucial part of the paper's institutional memory. University of Nevada, Reno journalism professor Jake Highton told the News & Review "every morning I pick up that paper and read it in six or seven minutes," due to the lack of background in stories.
