By: Reno Gazette-Journal Announces 61 Layoffs
RENO, Nev. ? The Reno Gazette-Journal plans to cut 61 positions over the next four weeks, halt a pair of weekly publications and close a commercial printing facility in Carson City, the newspaper's president and publisher said Wednesday.
The changes are part of a work force reduction announced on Oct. 29 by Gannett Co., the newspaper's parent company, in response to the nation's economic downtown, Ted Power said in an article on the Gazette-Journal's Web site Wednesday afternoon.
The final editions of the two weeklies?the Douglas (County) Times and Fallon Star Press?will be Dec. 26.
Power did not specify a closing date for the Carson City-based Eastern Sierra Publishing nor describe how many of the layoffs would occur in the Gazette-Journal's newsroom.
"At a time where we need to be more nimble and strategic, it is necessary to focus on our most profitable areas of business and our core audiences," Power said.
"We regret having to make these difficult business decisions, thank our employees for their contributions, our readers and advertisers for their loyalty. We trust that all of our readers and advertisers know that the RGJ remains committed to providing news and information for all of our communities in our many other print and digital products."
