By: E&P Staff Rep. Jack Murtha (D-Pa.) took a brief timeout from criticizing the Iraq War to win Scripps Howard News Service's annual "Celebrity Super Bowl Poll."
The conservative Congressman predicted that the Pittsburgh Steelers would defeat the Seattle Seahawks 21-7; the actual score was 21-10. In a strange-bedfellows scenario, Motley Crue lead singer Vince Neil made an identical 21-7 prediction, but lost a coin toss to Murtha.
For the 11th time in the poll's 17-year history, a majority of the participating celebrities correctly predicted the winning team. Seventy-three of the 100 celebs chose the Steelers, who were favored going into the game.
Many of the 73 narrowly lost the competition. Basketball Hall-of-Famer Bob Cousy and Chuck Yeager, the first pilot to break the sound barrier, picked Pittsburgh to win 17-10. CNN broadcaster Wolf Blitzer and comedian Penn Jillette favored the Steelers 21-17.
Only two celebrities -- actor Dennis Farina and former tennis star Martina Navratilova -- have ever pinpointed the winning team and the exact score.
