By: Joe Strupp The Tribune-Democrat of Johnstown, Pa., the hometown paper of Rep. John Murtha, the outspoken, anti-war Democrat, on its Web site today was not shy about basically rewriting a Tuesday Wall Street Journal story on Murtha?s success in steering federal funds to his hometown.
?The Wall Street Journal on Tuesday became the latest national publication to take a detailed look at the dealings of U.S. Rep. John Murtha, D-Johnstown,? the story stated. ?The article examines Murtha?s use of congressional earmarks in his home district.
?Specifically, the article says that if Murtha were a businessman in Johnstown, ?he?d be the biggest employer in town?,? the Tribune-Democrat wrote. ?The piece takes a deep look into funding set aside by Murtha specifically for the National Drug Intelligence Center, Concurrent Technologies Corp. and MTS Technologies.?
The Tribune-Democrat further notes that the nonpartisan group Taxpayers for Common Sense reports Murtha ?has steered more than $600 million in tax funds into his district during the past four years.?
The hometown paper at least went forth to get its own reaction from Murtha?s office on the article, quoting a Murtha spokesman as saying the article illustrated how the congressman is working to serve his constituents.
?The Wall Street Journal clearly notes that the whole reason Mr. Murtha came to Congress was to make life better for the people in our area,? the spokesman said. ?He has spent the last 34 years working to do that.?
And for those who want to actually read the article, the Tribune-Democrat reminds readers they can go to www.wsj.com.
