By: E&P Staff An arbitrator has ruled against the Journal de Montreal?s lock-out of 115 striking press operators.
The Gazette of Montreal reports today that the Journal, owned by Quebecor's Sun Media Corp., must arrange for the employees' return to work and compensate them for wages lost during the lock-out. With no contract since May, the press operators went out on strike 20 weeks before the Oct. 20 lock-out.
According to the Journal, a clause in its labor agreement allows a strike or lock-out to last no more than 20 weeks. In June, Journal management cited hundreds of thousands of dollars in pressroom damage from vandalism in June "committed by some pressroom employees."
