Report: Google Ready to Begin Testing of Online-Payment Option

Posted
By: E&P Staff In a move that may begin a shakeup of the online-payments market, Web giant Google Inc. is planning to begin testing its new service, GBuy, as early as this week, according to a report published Tuesday in the Wall Street Journal.

The new service would challenge the PayPal online-payment service, which is owned by eBay Inc., and would offer an unspecified rebate to attract customers, according to a source who spoke with the newspaper. It would also direct consumers who search for items to buy on Google to online advertisers who accept GBuy payments. The checkout service at these advertisers' sites would run through Google instead of their individual systems.
