Report: 'The Sun' in Baltimore to Discuss Buyouts with Union on Friday

By: E&P Staff Are buyouts or layoffs coming to The Sun in Baltimore? Managers will likely meet this Friday with union reps to discuss voluntary buyouts, Sun reporter Michael Hill, who is also unit chair of the Washington-Baltimore Newspaper Guild, told the local alt-weely CityPaper on Tuesday. "We know nothing beyond that," Hill told City Paper Tuesday afternoon, adding that he is basing his view on how these matters have been handled in the past.

A spokesman for The Sun, which continues to suffer circulation reversals, declined comment to City Paper.

"News of the meeting confirms rumors of staff reductions that swirled through the Baltimore newsroom late last week, following a meeting of managing editors convened by editor Tim Franklin," CityPaper reported. One source said: "The [editors] were basically told that major cuts were coming."

Franklin confirmed to City Paper that he met last Thursday with senior editors to discuss next year's budget, but said the paper hadn't yet made any decisions. "I'm not ruling [buyouts] out and I'm not ruling them in," he said.

The Sun, a Tribune Co. paper, shuttered two of its five foreign bureaus last month.
