By: E&P Staff The Republican Co., publisher of The Republican newspaper in Springfield, Mass., announced Tuesday that it will begin printing the Meriden, Conn., daily newspaper the Record-Journal beginning Feb. 1.

Eliot C. White, the Record-Journal?s publisher, informed his employees this move would cause the elimination of 17 full-time and 28 part-time positions within the paper?s packaging and printing departments. Seven full-time and four part-time positions will also be eliminated in other departments.

"The plan to outsource printing is a monumental change for the Record-Journal, which has been a local printing company for 142 years," White told the paper, adding that the newspaper's 30-year-old press was expensive to operate and has limited capabilities.

Larry A. McDermott, publisher and CEO of The Republican, said in a statement, "As a family-owned newspaper, we understand and appreciate how difficult this must be for everyone at the Record-Journal. Our staff will never lose sight of that, and will view the printing of Meriden's local daily newspaper as a very important responsibility."
