Rest of World, the award-winning nonprofit publication that focuses on exploring the impact of technology beyond the Western bubble, has appointed Anup Kaphle as its first editor in chief.

Kaphle joined Rest of World as executive editor in February 2020 and oversaw its launch just as the COVID-19 pandemic began. As executive editor, Kaphle led the publication’s editorial strategy from its 2020 launch to nearly a thousand stories published today, covering 94 countries in eight languages. As editor in chief, Kaphle will set the editorial vision for Rest of World’s future coverage, manage its growing global team of editors and reporters, and drive its mission forward during the publication’s next phase of growth.

Since he joined, Kaphle has guided Rest of World’s focus, making labor one of the primary areas of coverage. Under his direction, Rest of World has published impactful stories on the extreme lengths companies in Asia went to manufacture during the pandemic, and how the platform work model is reshaping entire economies, sectors, lifestyles and livelihoods.

“From day one, Anup has proven his strength as a dynamic and innovative leader for Rest of World, always willing to roll up his sleeves no matter what we needed in our startup years,” said Founder and CEO Sophie Schmidt. “His relentless focus on the quality of our stories and on our commitment to do right by freelance journalists globally has built a solid foundation for our future. I couldn’t be more excited to see him step into this new role.”

Rest of World enters its third year in 2023 with a robust foundation of tech coverage and a mission to push forward our understanding of technology’s role in rapidly changing cultures. The publication’s stories are anchored by a team of reporters and editors based in India, Mexico, Japan, Indonesia, the U.K. and more. Earlier this year, Rest of World won five awards at Society of News Design, including an award of excellence for use of photography, and its stories were awarded excellence in technology and business reporting categories by the Society of Publishers in Asia.

“From the beginning, Rest of World has distinguished itself by bringing human-centered tech stories from non-western countries to the forefront of the global conversation,” said Kaphle. “I’m deeply honored to lead this team of talented journalists that has already done such outstanding work, and I’m looking forward to producing ambitious reporting that challenges pre-existing perceptions about where innovation happens, delights people with stories about the unintended consequences of tech, and connects the dots for our global readers.”

Prior to joining Rest of World in 2020, Kaphle spent two years in his home country of Nepal as the editor in chief of The Kathmandu Post, where he received praise for his transformation of the country’s leading English daily. Before that, he was the executive editor at Roads & Kingdoms and deputy foreign editor at BuzzFeed News. He began his career in international news at The Washington Post, where he spent more than five years, and as the foreign digital editor, oversaw production of award-winning multimedia projects.
