By: Retired Indianapolis Star editor John H. "Jerry" Lyst has died of pancreatic cancer at the age of 76.

Lyst first joined the Star in 1955 as a police reporter and later was a Statehouse reporter, columnist and business editor. In 1979, he became the Star's editor, overseeing its opinion pages. He retired from that position in 2000.

Sharon Long Lyst said that her husband of 50 years was proud of upholding the conservative tradition of the Star's editorial pages.

Retired Star managing editor Lawrence "Bo" Connor called Lyst an old-school newspaperman who could not be compromised.
