Return of the Star Chamber?

By: Editorial Staff Hearings surrounding a contempt-of-court charge against a California newspaper will remain closed to the public and press, despite requests from two news organizations to open the proceedings.
Santa Cruz County Superior Court Judge Samuel Stevens issued the closed-door order July 30, and repeated it at an Aug. 4 hearing, in the case against the Santa Cruz County Sentinel and one of its reporters, Robin Musitelli. The Sentinel and the San Jose Mercury News each filed motions Aug. 3 to open the proceedings, but Stevens has yet to act on the requests or the contempt charge itself.
The next hearing is set for Aug. 16.
