By: E&P Staff Reuters has launched a free top stories service for mobile phones worldwide as part of a plan to grow the audience for its news.

The service offers the top 10 Reuters news stories updated throughout the day, accompanied by photographs.

"As information and images on mobile phones become more popular, there is a real opportunity for a news brand like Reuters to expand our reach in the United States," Steven Smyth, vice president of Reuters Media, said in a statement. "By putting the power of our global news operation directly into the hands of consumers, we offer them the chance to be the first to know the breaking news stories and images making headlines at home and around the world."

Mobile phone customers with Internet-enabled LG, Motorola, Nokia, Siemens, Panasonic, Sharp, and SonyEricsson phones can access the feed at mobile.reuters.com.

About 57,000 people in the U.S. already access Reuters news from phones and PDAs through AvantGo.
