'Review-Journal' To Launch Magazine

By: (AP) The Las Vegas Review-Journal on Saturday will launch a new quarterly glossy magazine, Cerca, about the culture and landscape of southern Nevada.

The 64-page, four-color magazine focuses on destinations within easy reach of urban Las Vegas. Cerca is Spanish for "close" or "nearby."

Review-Journal Publisher Sherman R. Frederick said he conceived the magazine after realizing that some of the world's most spectacular scenery, including the Grand Canyon, Death Valley, and the Joshua trees of the Mojave desert, are less than a day's drive away but often overshadowed by the casinos of Las Vegas.

"It is then only fitting that Cerca complete the circle by telling the story of the land that surrounds Las Vegas," he wrote in an essay in its first issue.

Dale Wetenkamp, special projects manager of the Review-Journal, is the magazine's publisher. A.D. Hopkins is editor; Jim Laurie, director of photography; and Ched Whitney, art director.

Copies of the magazine will be available in bookstores and newsstands starting Saturday, and copies mailed to more than 7,000 subscribers in early October. The magazine sells for $5.99 per copy or $17.99 for a one-year subscription. The magazine also will include an advertising section.
