Rhea Eskew, Former 'Greenville (S.C.) News' Publisher, Dies At 84

By: E&P Staff Rhea T. Eskew, a former publisher of The Greenville News and senior executive of its old parent Multimedia Inc., has died aged 84, the newspaper reported.

Eskew died Saturday at his home in Greenville, the News reported in an obituary by staff writer Clark Brooks.

A Tennessee native, Eskew joined the Army as an underage 17-year-old shortly after the 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor. After the war, he joined United Press International, where he would work for the next 24 years.

He joined the Greenville News-Piedmont Co. as general manager in 1973, and was named vice president a few months later. He was senior executive of the paper's former owner, Multimedia Inc. from 1978 until his retirement in 1987. He continued to serve on its board of directors until 1995, when Multimedia was bought by Gannett Co. Inc.

Eskew was heavily involved in community affairs, serving as president of Goodwill Industries of Upper South Carolina, and the Greenville Symphony Orchestra as well as chairman of the United Way campaign.

Eskew is survived by his wife, Nancy Eskew; sons Rhea T. Eskew Jr., Tucker Alexander Eskew and Hall Edward Eskew; daughter Elizabeth Vaughan Overman; and eight grandchildren.
