R.I. Paper Says Candidate Distorted 'Editorial' in Promo Fliers

By: E&P Staff A West Warwick, R.I., newspaper has claimed that one of its editorials was distorted for use in a promotional flier for a candidate for city council.

In the race for Ward 2 city council, Republican candidate David Cerullo distributed letter-sized fliers that appear to be a copy of an editorial from The Kent County Daily Times in West Warwick, R.I., reported the paper. In actuality, said the paper, the flier's ?editorial? contained bits and pieces of an actual Daily Times story, distorted to favor Cerullo.

According to an article in today's editions, the flier used content from a Daily Times story to praise Cerullo for attending a local debate last week that his opponent, Democratic candidate David Gosselin Jr., did not. The original editorial, however, was a more general piece on the time-consuming nature of holding a political office.

The text had been noticeably ?cut and pasted? on the flier, said the article, and the style and appearance was constructed to look like that of the Daily Times, including its name and logo.

The Daily Times cited a similar incident last month in which promotional materials for Cerullo inaccurately labeled him as member of the Town Committee, rather than the Republican Town Committee.
