Ricardo Venegas, who had been treasurer of the Journal Register Co., was named the new chief financial officer Friday for ImpreMedia, the nation's largest Spanish-language newspaper chain.

""Ricardo brings a wealth of experience as a seasoned financial executive in the media industry,"" ImpreMedia Chairman and CEO John Paton said in a statement. ""He is well known to both the financial and media communities. His strong financial skills and media industry experience will be key in building our future success at ImpreMedia.""

Venegas had been treasurer for the Journal Register Co. since 2004. Previously, he was treasurer for RCN Corp., a publicly traded provider of bundled phone, cable and high-speed Internet services.

Venegas replaces Steven Greenberg, the CFO since ImpreMedia's inception in 2002. Greenberg is leaving to return to private equity, the company said.

""Steve Greenberg has played an invaluable role in the creation and the building of our company from an idea in 2002 into the number one Spanish language news and online publisher today,"" Paton said. ""He very early on saw the investment opportunity in Hispanic print and online and worked tirelessly to maximize that opportunity through our seven acquisitions and through organic growth.""

ImpreMedia's newspapers include the nation's largest Spanish-language daily, La Opinion in Los Angeles; El Diario La Prensa in New York City; and the Chicago weekly La Raza.
