'Richmond Times-Dispatch' Deputy Editor Wins 2008 Bastiat Prize

By: E&P Staff Richmond (Va.) Times-Dispatch Deputy Editor Bart Hinkle has been awarded the International Policy Network?s 2008 Bastiat Prize for Journalism. The award was announced at IPN?s 2008 Bastiat Prize Dinner in New York City.

The Bastiat Prize, named for the 19th-century French philosopher and journalist Fr?d?ric Bastiat, honors writers whose published works advocate institutions of a free society. Such themes include limited government, rule of law brokered by an independent judiciary, protection of private property, free markets, free speech, and sound science.

Hinkle, who was also a finalist for the prize in 2007, is currently deputy editor of the Times-Dispatch's editorial pages and has been with the newspaper since 2006. He has also worked as a columnist and senior editorial writer. Hinkle is a graduate of the University of Virginia and was the 2004 reciepient of the Eugene C. Pulliam Fellowship for Editorial Writing from the Sigma Delta Chi Foundation of the Society of Professional Journalists.

The prizes for second and third place went to consulting editor for the Economic Times of India, Swaminathan Aiyar, and political editor at The Spectator (UK), Fraser Nelson, respectively.
