By: E&P Staff To be installed this fall, a 42-hopper, dual-delivery, shaftless Magnapak inserter from Heidelberg of Dover, N.H., will be part of a post-press project at The Press-Enterprise in Riverside, Calif., which will keep running its one Heidelberg NP1472 and three NP1372 inserters.
The selection was based on the Magnapak's speed and versatility, as well as the vendor's integrated approach, according to Press-Enterprise Facilities Services Director Steve Favero. Magnapak cycles at up to 30,000 papers per hour in single-delivery mode, 60,000 in dual delivery. Independently driven hoppers and Omnizone controls allow automated zoning at full production speed.
Heidelberg will supply its Omnizone supervisory and downstream bundle controls and hopper loaders with the inserter, as well as oversee integration of Quipp belt conveyors and stackers and a Ferag MultiDisc winder/unwinder system to store advance runs. The complete post-press system will allow automatic section winding from the press and their delivery to the Magnapak concurrently or at a later time for inserting.
Favero said the system will be used initially for Sunday packages, which routinely include 30-35 inserts. Single-delivery mode will allow inserting of up to 41 products into one jacket. Dual delivery will be used to insert two independent product streams simultaneously for increased throughput. Future plans call for Heidelberg to add selective total-market-coverage label controls, allowing the paper to imprint address information on selectively packaged products for Postal Service delivery.
