Riverwalk Plans for Old 'Detroit Free Press' Plant to be Announced Today

By: E&P Staff The Detroit Riverfront Conservancy is expected to announce plans at a press conference today for the 22-acre parcel once owned by Detroit Media Partnership and acquired by the conservancy last month after agreement was reached earlier in the year.

The Detroit News quoted conservancy spokeswoman Carly Strachan saying the property clears the way for the Riverwalk's first major section extending from Cobo Center south toward the Ambassador Bridge, with approximately 2,000 feet of Detroit River frontage. The first half of the project opened in spring.

The Detroit Media Partnership, joint operating agency for the News and the Detroit Free Press, sought $20 million for the site and the old plant (built by Knight Ridder in the 1970s for the Free Press) that closed in 2005, but Strachan said she did not know the sale price. Both papers are now printed at their Sterling Heights plant.

Eventually to reach from Belle Isle to the Ambassador Bridge, the vehicle-free Riverwalk will include parks, interpretive displays. Bought and built with public and private funding, the Riverwalk will be maintained by the nonprofit conservancy.
