By: Wendy Zomparelli, president and publisher of The Roanoke Times, will retire in February, a newspaper official announced Wednesday.
She will be succeeded by advertising director Debbie Meade, said Bruce Bradley, president of Landmark Publishing Group, a division of Landmark Communications Inc. that owns the newspaper.
Zomparelli, 56, has been president and publisher of The Times since 2000. She joined the newspaper in 1984 as a features writer, and also served as features editor, editor and vice president and general manager. She previously worked at The News & Observer in Raleigh, N.C.
In 2003, Zomparelli led the newspaper's redesign and the installation of a new press. Under her leadership, The Roanoke Times has twice ranked first in the U.S. for readership penetration.
"Wendy's decisive leadership style and innovative spirit have made a significant impact on The Roanoke Times, roanoke.com and the community at large," Bradley said.
Meade, who began as a staff writer at the newspaper in 1983, will succeed Zomparelli on Feb. 12.
