Robinson to Become Prez, CEO of NY Times Co.

By: E&P Staff Russell T. Lewis, president and CEO of The New York Times Co., announced today that he will retire by the end of 2004. Janet L. Robinson, who today was named executive vice president and COO, will succeed Lewis as president and CEO at year's end.

Lewis, 56, said in a statement that he felt it was time for a change. "The decision to retire was a difficult and personal one but it was made easier for me knowing that Janet is so well prepared to lead the company."

Lewis, who has served as CEO since 1997, first started with the Times as a copy boy in 1966 while in college, eventually becoming a news clerk and a news assistant. He continued to work at the Times as a legal clerk while in Brooklyn Law School. In 1977 he returned to the company as a staff attorney.

Robinson, 53, brings 21 years of experience at the company. In 2001, she was named senior vice president, newspaper operations, retaining her position as president and general manager of the Times newspaper. She has been responsible for the operations of the company's newspaper properties including the Times, the International Herald Tribune, The Boston Globe and 16 others. Before joining the Times in 1983, she was a public school teacher.

The company also announced that Leonard P. Forman, senior vice president and chief financial officer, was named executive vice president and CFO of the company. Scott Heekin-Canedy, senior vice president, circulation, was named president and general manager of the newspaper.

Forman will continue to be responsible for the management of all corporate financial functions. In his new position, he will also oversee information technology, corporate communications and the company's investment in two paper mills.

Heekin-Canedy will be responsible for all the business operations of the Times newspaper. A successor will assume his circulation responsibilities and is expected to be named shortly.
