Gannett's Democrat and Chronicle Media Group in Rochester, N.Y., will begin printing up to 45,000 copies of USA Today at the Canal Ponds plant in suburban Greece next month.

Besides the Democrat and Chronicle, the facility has been printing approximately 10,000 copies of the News Corp.'s New York Post since January.

Copies of the Gannett national daily for regional distribution have been printed about 35 miles west in Batavia since the paper's launch in 1982. The loss of the contract at Johnson Newspapers' Daily News was first reported last summer. Batavia had been named a top USA Today print site for five years.

Gannett officials told the Democrat and Chronicle that by moving the work to its plant it sought to improve delivery times and sales in the region.

The paper reported its operations vice president, Brian Ambor, saying that work for the Post and USA Today allowed the plant to rehire some full-time workers. USA Today is to start rolling off the plant's manroland Geoman press on June 28.
