In late summer 1962, Guilford High School, the city’s fourth senior high school opened; Rock Cut State Park was dedicated and opened by Gov. Otto Kerner; and evening local news editor David Shultz began a 52-year newspaper career with one of the Rockford Register Star’s predecessors, the Morning Star.

Shultz, 70, the newspaper’s resident local historian, one of its longest serving employees, and perhaps the biggest Yankees fan outside of New York, retired Wednesday.

“It’s all got to end sometime,” he said. “I’ve been here a long time now, and I’ve had a lot of good experiences.”
