By: E&P Staff The Rockford (Ill.) Register Star selected Ferag gripper conveyor to compliment the KBA Colora press in its production plant upgrade, scheduled for completion next April.
With the project well under way and the press hall to be completed in fall, the press will ship in August and the two Ferag UTR gripper conveyors will be installed early next year.
The Ferag system will feature a quarter folder pick up at the folder, with delivery directly to an in-line three-knife trimmer and stacker from Make that Ferag is supplying. The Ferag package also includes an in-folder gluing system from PressTronics. Together the system will allow for a glued, quarter fold product to be picked up, trimmed, and stacked hands free.
The primary conveyor also will feed the existing Goss 630 inserter on-line before delivering to the ROP stackers.
Register Star Production Director Kris Smith said in a statement that the gripper's reliability in "accurately picking up quarter-folded products ... weighed heavily into our decision." He added that the paper hopes the turnkey approach to gluing, trimming, and conveying will help it increase both commercial printing and production of more non-daily products for readers and advertisers.
