'Rocky' Biggest Paper to Fold? Er, Not By a Long Shot

Posted
By: Mark Fitzgerald My bad: The Rocky Mountain News may be the biggest U.S. newspaper to fold in a long time, but as several alert E&P readers have pointed out, it was assuredly not the largest.

The Rocky?s final Audit Bureau of Circulations FAS-FAX reported a five-day weekday circulation of 210,281.

With that circulation it wasn?t even the biggest to fold in the West. In 1995, The Houston Post was closed by its new owners, rival Houston Chronicle parent Hearst, when it had a daily circ reported at 287,215. (Thanks to Ken Doctor and his alert readers.)

Earlier, in 1978, the Chicago Daily News folded with a circulation Doctor reports as about 327,000.

But all those were small fry compared to the direct and indirect victims of the storied 1963 newspaper strike in New York City.

When the World Journal Tribune, an ungainly merger of three Gotham dailies, succumbed after just eight months of existence in 1967, it was selling 700,000 copies daily, The New York Times reported on May 6, 1967.

In 1963, the New York Mirror was folded while selling 800,000 copies daily, the Times reported in an Oct. 16, 1963 article.

Was that the biggest-ever paper to fold? I?m not going there.
