By: E&P Staff John Temple, the last editor and publisher of the Rocky Mountain News, was named editor of Peer News, the Honlulu-based local news service that will report on local Hawaiian issues.
"In addition to an exemplary background in publishing, editing, and reporting, John has also created several innovative platforms and led projects that helped promote civil discussion of political and social issues," Peer News CEO and Publisher Pierre Omidyar wrote on its site. "Frankly, these efforts were probably ahead of their time. We're confident, however, that now is the right time to bring this kind of thinking to our local news service."
Omidyar, the chairman and founder of eBay, said Temple will be "busy hiring reporters and an assistant editor as soon as possible."
Peer News will be an online-only news service.
On his blog, Temple said he was "moving to Paradise. For a dream job."
Temple said the news service is looking for "thoughtful writers with a proven record of breaking new ground with investigative reporting.' There will be considerable interaction with readers and the community, he added, and everyone hired must be tech-savvy.
