'Rocky Mountain News' Archives Going to Denver Public Library

Posted
By: E&P Staff Archives of the Rocky Mountain News, shut down in February by E.W. Scripps Co., will be housed at the Denver Public Library, the company said Monday.

Scripps said it is finalizing an arrangement with the public library to assume ownership of the voluminous archives, including all digital and print newspaper clips, information files, microfilm, photos, correspondence, books and marketing material.

Scripps said it is negotiating a similar agreement with the Colorado Historical Society, which would take ownership of artifacts such as sings, photographs, artwork and special editions.

"We sought partners who would regard the deep and rich trove of Rocky archives as a community treasure that needs to be preserved for generations to come," Scripps President and CEO Rich Boehne said in a statement. "It's good for Denver that these two institutions share our commitment to maintaining the public's access to these pages of history."

The Scripps announcement did not mention the disposition of the intellectual property of the Rocky -- its name and Web site -- which it said at the time of the Feb. 27 closing of the newspaper was still for sale. In recent days, the Denver alternative paper Westword reported Scripps has been reaching out to potential buyers of the intellectual property.

Details of those efforts at are E&P's business-oriented Fitz & Jen blog.
