By: E&P Staff Universal Press Syndicate film critic Roger Ebert received a big "thumbs up" of his own -- the 2009 Honorary Life Member Award -- from the Directors Guild of America on Jan. 31 during a ceremony in Los Angeles.

The event featured tributes from directors, including Steven Spielberg, Martin Scorsese, Clint Eastwood and Oliver Stone. The Pulitzer Prize winner was bestowed an honorary life membership in the guild for his years of writing about filmmaking.

Ebert took the stage with his wife, Chaz, and got the biggest standing ovation of the night. "The motion picture is the art form I love above all others," Ebert said in a statement recorded via a synthetic computer voice. "It is the symphony, and you are the conductors."
