By: E&P Staff Syndicated Chicago Sun-Times movie critic Roger Ebert will be honored with a special Gotham Awards for his many years of championing independent films.
"'Through his columns, books and television show, Roger Ebert has almost single-handedly introduced independent film to American moviegoers,'' Michelle Byrd, executive director of the Independent Feature Project, which presents the Gotham Awards, told The Associated Press. ''His championing of high-quality, undiscovered films has put countless films, filmmakers and actors on the map.''
AP noted that Ebert is only the second film critic to receive the Gotham Awards Tribute. New Yorker magazine critic Pauline Kael received the award in 1995.
Ebert is unable to speak, the result of a procedure that followed a series of cancer surgeries. However, the critic, who in August told AP that he was cancer-free, is expected to attend the awards ceremony in New York.
