Rohde, Kidnapped for 7 Months, Returns to 'New York Times' Newsroom

Posted
By: Joe Strupp David Rohde, The New York Times reporter whose seven-month kidnapping in Afghanistan was kept quiet by the Times and other news outlets, returned to the newsroom on Wednesday, the paper's City Room blog reported.

Along with interpreter Tahir Ludin, who also was kidnapped and escaped with Rohde on June 19, the reporter visited colleagues in the New York office for the first time.

"In an intensely emotional moment, the two men walked into the Times newsroom to enormous waves of applause from scores of reporters and editors," reporter Clyde Haberman wrote on the blog. "At Mr. Rohde's side was Kristen Mulvihill, his wife of only two months when he, Mr. Ludin and their driver, Asadullah Mangal, were abducted on Nov. 10 outside Kabul. As the long ovation continued, Mr. Ludin wiped away tears. Some in the newsroom seemed near tears themselves."
