James N. Rosse, former president and CEO of Freedom Communications Inc., died yesterday in Irvine, Calif., from illness. He was 72.

From 1992 to 1999, Rosse served as the company's president and CEO. Under his leadership, he grew Freedom's broadcast division from five television stations to eight, also adding four daily newspapers to the newspaper division.

A native of Sidney, Neb., Rosse also was professor of economics at Stanford University where he taught for 26 years. He also held positions of associate dean of humanities and sciences and director of the Center for Economic Policy Research. Rosse was appointed provost in 1984 before joining Freedom in 1992. While at Stanford, he established a newspaper consulting practice, specializing in newspaper and anti-trust litigation and regulatory concerns.

Correction: Rosse was president of Freedom Communications, not publisher, as this story originally stated.
