By: E&P Staff Roxana Saberi, who was released last month from an Iranian jail, will be awarded the Medill Medal for Courage in Journalism at the June 20 convocation of Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism.
Northwestern said Saberi will not speak at the graduation ceremony, which will not be open to news organizations.
The speaker at the ceremony will be Washington Post Publisher and CEO Katharine Weymouth.
Saberi, who earned her master's degree in journalism from Medill in 1999, was working in Iran when she was arrested in February. She was sentenced to eight years in prison for espionage on April 18.
"We are honored to welcome Roxana Saberi home to Medill and recognize her courage both as an alumna and as a dedicated journalist," said Medill Dean John Lavine.
Medill said the Medal for Courage, awarded annually, recognizes "outstanding moral, ethical or physical courage in pursuit of a story to an individual or team of journalists working for a U.S.-based news outlet."
It said the "decision to award a special, out-of-cycle medal is a testament to Saberi's personal and journalistic resilience during an extremely difficult ordeal."
