Ryan Frank Named Publisher of the Oregon Daily Emerald

EUGENE-(Feb. 2, 2011)-The Oregon Daily Emerald Board of Directors today announced the appointment of Ryan Frank as publisher of the University of Oregon's independent student news outlet. He succeeds Mike Thoele, who has served as interim publisher since August 2010.

Frank, an investigative reporter at The Oregonian, was the Emerald's editor-in-chief during its centennial year in 1998. He will begin transitioning into the role of publisher on Feb. 28.

"We selected Ryan Frank for his knowledge of the unique challenges facing the Emerald, his ability to inspire this generation of student journalists, and his passion for innovation," said Melody Ward Leslie, board chair. "He emerged as the board's unanimous choice from a national field of exceptionally qualified applicants."

Frank, 33, has served as president of the Oregon chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists. He organized training sessions across the state and led a statewide audit of government compliance with open records laws.

During his tenure as editor, Frank led the Emerald to finalist honors for the Pacemaker, the highest award conferred by the Associated Collegiate Press. Previously he was the Emerald's sports editor and the newsroom's elected representative to the Emerald board of directors.

He earned his bachelor's degree in journalism from the UO School of Journalism and Communication in 1999 and began his career as a government, business and investigative reporter at The Oregonian.

The Oregon Daily Emerald has served the University of Oregon community as the campus news source of record since 1900. It has operated independently of the university as a private nonprofit company since 1971. Its online and print publications now include Emerald Magazine, Game Day, Scene, Moving Guide and a daily newspaper published Monday through Friday during the academic year and weekly during the summer.
