Saberi 'Courage' Medal Awarding to Feature Live Feed for Media

By: E&P Staff Northwestern University will provide a live video feed for the news media when Roxana Saberi, who was released last month from an Iranian jail, receives the Medill Medal for Courage in Journalism at next Saturday's convocation of the University's Medill School of Journalism.

Northwestern said because of limited space in the auditorium, the convocation will be open only to students and ticketed guests, but that "arrangements will be made for a news media pool photographer if there are requests for coverage."

Saberi will not speak at the graduation ceremony, Northwestern said. Washington Post Publisher and CEO Katharine Weymouth is the main speaker at the convocation.

Saberi, who earned her master's degree in journalism from Medill in 1999, was working in Iran when she was arrested in February. She was sentenced to eight years in prison for espionage on April 18.

The Medill Medal for Courage, awarded annually, recognizes "outstanding moral, ethical or physical courage in pursuit of a story to an individual or team of journalists working for a U.S.-based news outlet." She is being awarded the medal now as a "testament to Saberi's personal and journalistic resilience during an extremely difficult ordeal," Medill said.
