By: A new, reformatted Modesto Bee newspaper hit the stands Monday.
The changes include a narrower format, reorganization of content and more color in a newspaper that's now printed at its sister paper, the Sacramento Bee.
Publisher Margaret Randazzo told readers in a front-page column that the changes should bring "operational efficiencies and cost savings" as newspapers struggle in a down economy and readership shifts, in part, to the Internet.
The move comes after the Sacramento-based McClatchy Co., which owns the Bee newspapers and 28 other dailies nationwide, has worked to slash operating costs through layoffs and buyouts.
McClatchy has seen advertising revenue at its California and Florida newspapers drop 22 percent this year.
