'Sacramento Union' Folds, Again

Posted
By: Mark Fitzgerald Fifteen years after The Sacramento Union daily newspaper folded, a politically conservative weekly that revived its name in 2006 called it quits Thursday.

In a statement posted on its Web site Friday, Editor in Chief and Publisher James Dutra said the paper "could not overcome the difficulties so many of our local businesses are encountering." Sacramento's housing collapse and consequent economic woes have been acute even by the standard of California.

"It is my sad responsibility to inform our community that The Sacramento Union is suspending publication," Dutra said in the posting. "The Sacramento Union was developed to present a different voice for our community, a conservative one. I believe there is a greater need than ever to have publications serving our community who stand up and present a different point of view on the many challenging public policy issues of today and tomorrow."

The original daily Union, which once employed Mark Twain, folded after more than 140 years. It had been considered a politically conservative paper, and for a period was owned by Richard Scaife. Joseph Farah, founder of the WorldNetDaily Web site was a former editor.

Before Dutra revived the Union in 2006, there was a previous attempt to publish as a bi-monthly magazine in 2004.
