By: The South Asian Journalists Association (SAJA) paid tribute to Daniel Pearl and presented its annual journalism awards during the organization's eighth annual dinner held Saturday at Columbia University.
SAJA presented the first Daniel Pearl Award for outstanding print reporting on South Asia by a U.S. journalist to Mohamad Bazzi of
Newsday, Melville, N.Y. The SAJA Journalism Leader Award was presented to Steve Coll, managing editor of
The Washington Post. Coll previously served as South Asia bureau chief for the
Post and is the author of a book on the region.
Timothy O'Leary of
The Dallas Morning News won the award for outstanding editorial/op-ed on South Asia. Peter Tobia of
The Philadelphia Inquirer was honored for outstanding photo about South Asia or South Asians in North America.
The award for best print story by South Asian journalists working in the U.S. or Canada went to Sudarsan Raghavan and Sumana Chatterjee of Knight Ridder, for their work on slavery and the chocolate trade in Africa.
