Sale Of 'Albuquerque Tribune' Reported Close

By: E&P Staff Two public relations executives say they expect to become the owners of the Albuquerque (N.M.) Tribune by the end of the year.

According to a report in The New Mexican of Santa Fe, Tom Carroll and Doug Turner, owners of the Albuquerque-based D.W. Turner public relations and advertising firm, are in serious negotiations to buy the afternoon paper from E.W. Scripps Co.

"We have closed the investment pool, and we have raised the money," Carroll was quoted as saying. "We are in the final negotiation sessions ... and I believe we have a deal."

Both Carroll and Turner were out of town Wednesday, and not immediately available for comment, their office told E&P.

In August, Cincinnati-based Scripps said it would fold the 85-year-old daily unless it could find a buyer.

The Tribune has been in the nation's oldest joint operating agreement (JOA) with the much larger Albuquerque Journal since 1933. The JOA , which has an expiration date of 2022, would end with a sale.

The Tribune, which as recently as 2000 still had a circulation of more than 20,000, reported in the most recent Audit Bureau of Circulations FAS-FAX that it was selling an average 9,944 copies on weekdays.
