By: E&P Staff Terry Feinberg, general manager of The Californian and El Sol, both in Salinas, Calif.,
explained in an editorial today the impact of parent company Gannett Co.'s cuts on his papers and his hopes for the future.
Forty positions have eliminated and 35 employees were laid off at the two papers; however, none of those staffers are newsroom personnel.
"It would be easy to blame the economy for all that ails us, but the newspaper industry has also struggled to adapt to, and profit from, the changing media environment," he writes.
The next step is reducing newsprint costs -- the next largest expense after staff, according to Feinberg. The newspapers will seek changes that reduce newsprint waste and the number of press runs. Design changes and more ?reader-friendly? Web sites are also in the plan, the editorial said.
?As we struggle to serve Main Street while pleasing Wall Street, we must change and evolve," Feinberg adds. "We will not waver from the special public trust and journalistic responsibility we have to the communities we serve; we just have to figure out how to do it more efficiently and effectively, and with fewer resources."
