Announcement from Features Editor Ben Williams:

We are excited to announce that Samantha Chery will become a breaking news reporter in The Washington Post’s Features department.

Samantha started at The Post in summer 2022 as an intern on the Features desk, where she wrote about R. Kelly’s sentencing and how servers found that pigtails earned them more in tips, then became a contract multiplatform editor for the Gender & Identity team, reporting on the first makeup-free Miss England finalist and why Indigenous people find the “Avatar” movies offensive. She previously wrote features and entertainment stories for Andscape and the South Florida Sun Sentinel.

Samantha is from the greater Orlando area and is a proud graduate of the University of Florida, where she received her bachelor’s in journalism and was an inaugural managing editor of Atrium, the school’s narrative nonfiction magazine.

She lives in Washington with her pet fish, Taco. Outside of work, she loves watching reality TV, hip-hop dancing, satisfying her sweet tooth and exploring D.C.’s museums and art galleries
